A Tour to Kozhikode (Calicut)

Kozhikode is one of the most important domestic and international trade and business centers. This city came into existence when the King of Ernad, Udaiyavar conquered and built a fort at velapuram, which is now known as Kozhikode or Calicut. Calicut is derived from the word “calico”. It is said that fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth have originated from here.

This place is between Arabian Sea and the Wayanad hills, having many historic sites, beaches, and emerald green countryside.

Places to see

Manchiria

This is at the heart of Kozhikode, with many important institutions and public library. The common wealth trust office, which is one of the oldest buildings, out here.

Kuttiyadi

This place is 70 kms away from Kozhikode. This village is result of major hydroelectric project called as “Kuttiyadi Hydro electric power project”.

Pazhassirajah Museum and Art Gallery

Ancient mural paintings, models of temples, antique bronzes, old coins and megalithic monuments are being exhibited in museum. And the Art Gallery has the collections of Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings.

Badagara

The flourishing commercial centre of martial art “Kalaripayattu” is in Badagara. This is the birthplace of one of the hero of North Malabar , Thacholi Othanan.

Krishna Menon Museum

Personal belongings and souvenirs gifted to honour the great Indian and world leader Mr. V.K. Krisha Menon is being exhibited.

Beypore

This place is located at the mouth of Chaliyar River. Famous for boat building industry. The traditional boat builders who are also called as Khalasis, are famous for their country crafts called as “Uru”.

Kappad Beach

This place is locally known as Kappakadavu and is full of rocks. To mark the historic moment of Vasco da Gama’s landing, a small stone monument is built here. The protruding sprawling rock into the sea, 800 year old Ancient temple and Kappada beach resort is an interesting place to visit.

Dolphins Point

Here you can see tree lined sand, the lighthouse and 2 piers. The most interesting part is to see the Dolphins dancing in the sea, early in the morning.

Thikkoti Lighthouse

This lighthouse was built for Velliyamkallu rock, as this is the transit home of migratory birds, off moodadi coast. The remains of the ship which was wrecked long back can be still found here.

Manachira Maidan

Famous for King Vikrama’s palace tank, with musical fountain.

Backwater

Elathur canal and Kallai River favorite places for boating, kadlundi and is famous for water sport.

Peruvannamuzhi Dam

Famous for speedboat, rowboat cruises, a bird sanctuary and a crocodile farm.

River Kallai

Famous for oldest iron bridge and is the second largest timber trading center in Asia.

Thusharagiri

This is a tribal tourist place, as two streams from western ghat meet Challipuzha river, which further divertes into 3 waterfalls, creating snowy spray.

Vellarimala

Most interesting place for adventure and trecking. The tributary of river Chaliyar, Kanjirapuzha forms winding paths of waterfalls at many points.
