Location and history
Haldwani along with its twin city Kathgodam is located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand in India. Also known as the ‘gateway of Kumaon’, Haldwani is the third largest city in terms of population. Established in the 19th century, it was renamed as Haldwani.
Places of interest
Haldwani has a lot to offer to the tourists. One of the most attractive tourist spot is the Gaula Barrage. A perfect spot for trekking, camping and sightseeing, Haldwani has become a picnic spot now owing to its scenic beauty and charm. It is situated on the banks of river Gaula, so in the earlier days this barrage was built for the purpose of irrigation. A lot of tourists visit this place on their way to Kumaon. The peace and tranquility of the Hedakhan Ashram also draws many tourists to visit this place. There are many beautiful temples and caves across the Gaula river and one can spend a whole day here without getting bored. It is also situated on the banks of river Gaula. This place is a must visit for all the tourists.
The Chitrashila Ghat, a vulnerable cremation ground of the Hindus is situated at Ranighat, about 8 km. from Haldwani. The Uttaryani fair is the main attraction here every year on the festival of Makar Sankranti. Located at Pantnagar, a part of Tanda forest is the Sanjay Van. About 23 km. from Haldwani, the Sanjay Van is a beautiful picnic spot of picturesque sights. Bird watching can also be done here. Rare migratory birds can be spotted here.
Some 22 kms from Haldwani is the popular site of excursion the Sat Tal. It is a fusion of seven freshwater lakes together. Often considered equivalent to the Westmoreland of England by the English, this place is indeed worth the comparison. All around the lakes are the beautiful dense oak and pine trees. There are other beautiful lakes and spots of excursion nearby Haldwani. They are the Naukuchia Tal, Mukteshwar and the Bhim Tal, all lovely places for excursion. The Jim Corbett National Park is about 55 km. from Haldwani. Being thee oldest national park of India, this park boasts of having about 448 species of wildlife and plants.
Other important places that can be visited are the various big industries, the shopping malls and the stadium of Haldwani. One can also make a visit to the grain, fruit and the vegetable market of this place because it is said to be the largest of its kind in the whole country.
