Allahabad Tour

A city of many dimensions is what befits a description of Allahabad. Hindu mythology states that Lord Brahma, the creator god, chose a land for 'Prakrishta Yajna'. The city boasts off some of the most famous parks and museums in India apart from regular attractions. Following are some of the favored tourist spots in Allahabad: -

Sangam

Allahabad is synonymous to Sangam or Prayag ("place of sacrifice" and "confluence"). The city has been named so because it is situated on the confluence of Ganges, Yamuna and mythical river Saraswati. That is why; Allahabad is counted among the holiest of cities in India. The holy Sangam is the site for Annual Magha Mela/Ardh Kumbh/Kumbh Mela.

Kumbh Mela

According to a legend, Vishnu was carrying a kumbh (pot) of amrita (nectar), when a scuffle broke out between the gods, and four drops were spilled. They fell to earth at the four tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain (tirtha means "ford of a river").

The event is commemorated every three years by the Kumbh Mela, held at each tirtha in turn; the Sangam is known as Tirtharaja, the "King of Tirthas", and its Mela, once every twelve years, is the greatest and holiest of all.

Patalpuri Temple

Patalpuri is an underground temple, inside the Allahabad fort. In this temple lies the Akshaya Vat – or the immortal tree. It is believed that Lord Rama, has visited the temple and the temple was also seen by the famous Chinese traveller and writer Hiuen Tsang during his visit to this place.

Hanuman Mandir

This unique temple at the Sangam is the only one in North India, where the idol of Lord Hanuman is seen in a reclining posture. When the Ganga is in spate, this temple gets submerged.

Allahabad Fort

There was a time when this fort was considered among the best garrisons in the entire Mughal Empire. At present is used by the army and only a limited area is open for visitors. Visitors are allowed to see the Ashokan Pillar and Saraswati Kup, a well, said to be the source of the Saraswati River and Jodhabai Palace. The Patalpur temple is also here. So is the much revered Akshaya Vat or immortal Banyan tree.

Ashoka Pillar

This gigantic Ashoka pillar, of polished sandstone stands 10.6 meters high, dating back to 232 BC. The pillar has several edicts and a Persian inscription of Emperor Jahangir in scripted on it, commemorating his attainment to the throne.

Minto Park

Minto Park that has been re-christened Madan Mohan Malaviya Park is a must visit destination in Allahabad. The park has its prominence in the chronicles of History and that is why it is a must for both researchers as well as casual visitor.

Anand Bhawan

Anand Bhavan is the ancestral home of Jawaharlal Nehru, the freedom fighter and the first Prime-Minister of India. The place is also home to Indira Gandhi, the "Iron Lady of India". The place has today been turned into a fine museum.

Alfred Park

Alfred Park is the largest park in Allahabad,& also has historical significance . The park is marked by huge statue of George V and Victoria that were installed in the very center.

This Park houses the tomb of Prince Khusru who was one of the sons of Emperor Jahangir
