Amethi is located at the south-west part of Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, India. It officially comes under the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar district, which is the newest and 72nd district of the state of Uttar Pradesh. This district is part of Faizabad division. It is named after Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj, a social reformer in Maharashtra.Amethi is very well known in the Indian Political history as the seat of power of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty.

The total Rural Population of Amethi is 83299 and the literacy rate is 39.5%.

A number of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses ply from Amethi, providing seamless local and national connectivity.

Political Background

The Amethi Parliamentary Constituency is a world fame seat mainly due to being connected with first Prime Minister and architect of modern India Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru's family. Both the sons of former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, Shri Sanjay Gandhi and thereafter Shri Rajiv Gandhi, who became Prime Minister of India, represented this constituency. Now it is represented by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, the wife of late Shri Rajiv Gandhi and presently the President of Indian National Congress as well as the leader of opposition in Indian Parliament.

Health & Education

Amethi has well known hospital known as Sanjay Gandhi Hospital at Munshiganj. Society for Animal Health Agriculture Science and Humanity is well known non-government organisation whose registered office is located at Munshiganj which is dedicated for transformation of rural life in Amethi. As an educational hub of the area it has got Indian Institute of Information Technology and Rajarshi Rananjay Post Graduate College.

Places of interest

Amethi, located at the south-west part of Sultanpur may boast of having the Avionics Division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the organisation is responsible for manufacture of Aircraft for Indian Airforce. Amethi has also a unit of Indo Gulf Fertilizers.

Amethi is also called as Raipur-Amethi of which Raipur belonged to the Raja of Amethi who lived at Ram Nagar. There is a temple called Hanumangarhi and a mosque both built about hundred years ago. About 3 km north of Ram Nagar there is a tomb of famous poet, Saint Malik Muhammad Jaisi where he died, and the fort was built by Bachghoti Rajas.
